The Citrus County FL real estate business is good for buyers and sellers alike! And Citrus County homes for sale are very affordable. Let me tell you a little bit about Citrus County. Beautiful Citrus County was established in 1887...the 2000 population was 119,700 and the projected 2005 population is 138,975. We are located along Florida's west-central coast and the Gulf of Mexico & approximately 70 miles north of Tampa and 60 miles northwest of Orlando. Rolling hills and naturally beautiful crystal clear springs, rivers and lakes set this section of FL apart from cities in the state. Environmentally and ecologically conscious, Citrus County has set aside over 150,000 acres out of its 683-square miles to preserve wildlife.
Citrus County is really a natural playground with much of the public land set aside for natural wetlands, bird sanctuaries, wildlife refuges, parks and preserves. The Homosassa State Wildlife Park , Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge, Crystal River Wildlife Refuge, Citrus County's 18 Birding trails, Fort Island Gulf Beach, Withlacoochee State Forest, and Crystal River Archaeological State Park make up just some of the many attractions you can explore
The Withlacoochee State Forest is in the south central part of the county and covers nearly 30,000 acres. In Homosassa we have the Homosassa Springs State Wildlife Park that features much of our native FL wildlife. The North and Eastern sides of the county are bordered by the Withlacoochee River, the East by the Tsala Apopka chain of lakes and the West by the Gulf of Mexico. Citrus County has over 52 miles of gulf coast, 106 miles of rivers, and 19,111 acres of lakes. So, as you can see, we will never have the overcrowding like some of the areas to our south!
There are 5 libraries and 2 hospitals - Citrus Memorial Hospital in Inverness and Seven Rivers Community Hospital in Crystal River. Churches and Synagogues ....... there are approximately 76 different locations where you can worship and they represent all major denominations and faiths.
Citrus County average year-round temperature is 72 degrees, with an average of 270 days of sunshine. Winter temperatures average 62 degrees and summer temperatures average 84 degrees. The wonderful weather and natural beauty provide for a host of activities. Citrus County offers a wide range of outdoor activities including fresh and salt water fishing, boating, swimming, diving, snorkeling, camping, hunting, tennis and golf at more than 20 area courses. Year round saltwater fisherman can find grouper and snapper off of coastal rock piles, seatrout and redfish are found in the grass beds and oyster bars and the tarpon ( or Silver Kings as they are popularly known ) are in the flats. One of the biggest area fishing attraction is the May - June run of the giant tarpon into our area. In June of 2003, a record breaking 190 lb tarpon was caught on a flyrod.
For the freshwater fisherman, there are large and small mouth bass, crappie, bluegill and catfish to be caught in the Tsala Apopka chain of lakes in the Inverness, Hernando and Floral City area on the east side of the county. Or try your luck in the pristine waters of the spring fed Homosassa and Crystal Rivers.
If kayaking or canoeing is something you enjoy then this area is for you! Plenty of birds and wildlife to see along the way. You can take a guided tour or venture out yourself for a day of leisure and explore the Chassahowitzka, Halls, Homosassa or Crystal Rivers.
One of Citrus Counties most famous residents is the manatee and people come from far and wide to scuba dive or snorkel with them. They are an endangered species so please no touching - but you can take lots of photos.
If you like cycling we offer "Rails to Trails," a 47 mile former railroad right of way that is perfect for bicycling, rollerblading or just walking. This peaceful trail is paved from the US Highway 41 overpass just north of Inverness to the Fort Cooper Road to the south.
In addition, other popular FL attractions such as Disney World, MGM, Sea World, Busch Gardens, Silver Springs, Wild Waters, Lowry Park Zoo and Universal Studios are just under a two hour drive or less from this area.
Come and see for yourself why so many people love the Citrus County lifestyle - there is something for everyone!!
